Users of Airbitz wallets need only open a slide-out menu and select “Discounted Gift Cards”, select a retailer, and then click “buy” next to the gift card denomination of their choice, $5, $10, $25.
Supported by Glidera, Airbitz also enables in-wallet buying and selling of bitcoin in the United States and Canada. American states covered by the service include Illinois, California, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Georgia. The states where only a buy service is available are Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Maine, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Utah.
The San Diego-based startup is also expanding its operations in Europe with the hiring of Lucas Betschart as core developer and the establishment of a Swiss office, according to a report from BTCManager.com. Betschart has experience in encryption and blockchain technology from his work at Crypto AG and Monetas AG, and is a prominent member of the Swiss bitcoin community.
