Former heavyweight champion and sometimes-controversial boxing legend, Mike Tyson is continuing his foray into the bitcoin world by, following up his own brand ATM with a Mike Tyson Digital Wallet. Connexus Corporation subsidiary, Bitcoin Direct, LLC has teamed up with Tyson to release a bitcoin wallet which is currently available on iOS and is coming soon to Android smartphones through Google Play (sometimes I regret having a Microsoft phone). In addition to functioning as a wallet , it also enables the purchase and selling of bitcoin if the user creates an account with the Gildera bitcoin exchange, and works with bitcoin ATMs worldwide.
As the first celebrity-linked wallet, Bitcoin Direct and Tyson are hoping the association will help spread the potential of bitcoin to a wider audience. As Peter Klamka, CEO of Bitcoin Direct noted: “Bitcoin Direct is pleased to partner with Mike Tyson because Tyson is a universally known star whose fan base extends generations. People around the world of all ages know Mike Tyson, and as such Tyson’s potential to expand the Bitcoin market is dramatic. The Mike Tyson Digital Wallet offers beginners a simple and secure way to get started with bitcoin. Users can create wallets for sharing funds with friends, store multiple personal wallets in the same app, accept payments from friends, or pay bitcoin-accepting businesses online or in person.”
After downloading the wallet, the user is able to open the app and add a wallet, which can be named. Bitcoin Direct does not charge users any fees for using the wallet and funds are added by sending bitcoin purchases through the app’s Gildera integration. Users are able to find their bitcoin address by opening the app, selecting a wallet and then ‘receive’ which display the address beneath the QR code.
Produced in partnership with bitcoin payment company BitPay, the wallet uses open source code from Bitpay’s Copay, in addition to a custom Tyson-focussed design experience, presumably to add a punchy style to the wallet – even the logo highlights the link (it’s a coin with Tyson’s facial tattoo on it which has a bite taken out of it).
